How long do you need at Fort McHenry?
The times that are actually fixed
I am wary of telling anyone how many minutes they will want, because the range I watched over five summers ran from a brisk lap of the seawall to most of a day with a book. What is not a matter of taste is the clock. Between Memorial Day and Labor Day the park runs 7:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. Monday to Friday and 7:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. at weekends. The fort, visitor center, gift shop and restrooms close a quarter of an hour before the gates, and last entry is fifteen minutes before that again.
Two ways to shape a visit
- Early and free. In at 7:00 a.m., seawall, grounds, out before the day warms up. Nothing is selling yet and nothing needs to.
- Later and inside. Arrive from 9:00 a.m. when the registers open, do the visitor center and the film, then pay for the star fort and the outer battery.
The version that goes wrong is the third one: arriving in the late afternoon on a weekday assuming the fort is open as long as the park is. It is not.
The receipt is valid seven days. If you run out of time, the second visit is already paid for, which takes the pressure off the first.
Fitting it into a Baltimore day
The fort is at 2400 East Fort Avenue in Locust Point, roughly three miles from the Inner Harbor, so it slots into a day rather than eating one. There is a worked plan on a Baltimore day around Fort McHenry, and if you are weighing the time against the cost, is it worth it takes that head-on.
A 45-minute alternative on the water
If time is the constraint, the Inner Harbor sightseeing cruise runs 45 minutes and names the fort as a sight seen from the water. None of it includes entry to the star fort. That is a National Park Service ticket, sold at the gate and nowhere else.
Frequently asked questions
How long does it take to tour Fort McHenry?
A morning is comfortable for the grounds, the visitor center, the film and the star fort. The hours matter more than the duration: registers open at 9:00 a.m. and last entry is 4:45 p.m. on weekdays, 5:45 p.m. at weekends.
Can you see Fort McHenry in an hour?
You can walk the free grounds and the seawall in well under an hour. Going inside the star fort adds time and a $15 adult fee, and the registers do not open until 9:00 a.m.
What happens if I arrive late in the day?
The star fort, visitor center, gift shop and restrooms close 15 minutes before the park, and last entry is 4:45 p.m. on weekdays or 5:45 p.m. at weekends. After that only the free grounds are open, until closing.
